UNC-Chapel Hill Awards Honorary Degree to Nobel Physicist, March 3

(Chapel Hill, N.C.—March 3, 2015) – Chancellor Carol L. Folt awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science to Peter Higgs, professor emeritus in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, during a ceremony at the University of Edinburgh on March 3.

Folt explained that the honorary degree was presented in recognition of Higgs’ revolutionary work in particle physics that culminated in 2012 with the identification of the Higgs boson and his subsequent honor of being jointly awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize for Physics. The theoretical paper that lies behind the Higg’s seminal research was written in 1965-1966 during his tenure at the Bahnson Institute of Field Physics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
