Towelettes clean up difficult-to-remove anticancer drugs from surfaces E-mail

A set of towelettes developed by two researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill can safely remove difficult-to-clean anticancer drugs commonly found on surfaces in hospitals, pharmacies, clinics and labs. The product, called Hazardous Drug Clean – or HDClean – addresses the growing concern regarding the safety of health care workers who frequently handle these potentially dangerous drugs.

For the past decade, much of the focus in the Arctic has centered on the rate at which ice melts and its ecological impact. Now, as Arctic ice continues to melt, carbon that has been stored in the frozen tundra for thousands of years is creeping up to the surface and exposed to a new element: sunlight. In a new study, researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, reveal that this newly exposed carbon could double the amount of greenhouse gases in the environment-- and profoundly change the trajectory of the climate change debate.

Salmon use Earth’s magnetic field to find their way home E-mail

Five years ago, marine biologists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill proposed a theory that sea turtles and salmon use the Earth’s magnetic forces to find their way back to their birthplace after migrating across thousands of miles of open, featureless sea. Now, those same researchers have found a way to test that theory in salmon – and found it to be true.
