Twenty-five rising sophomores at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have been awarded full scholarships for an innovative seven-week study abroad program in Southeast Asia this summer. The Carolina Southeast Asia Summer Program in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences, now under way, is designed especially for students at the end of their first year. The program, now in its sixth year, is made possible through a gift from the Twelve Labours Foundation in Carbondale, Colo., which provides scholarships valued at about $8,000 per student, covering all program costs. This year, the program is led by UNC political scientists Layna Mosley, Ph.D., and Andrew Reynolds, Ph.D. Mosley, an associate professor of political science, is a scholar of international relations and comparative political economies. Reynolds, an associate professor of political science, is an expert on emerging democracies, constitutional design and electoral politics. The students are taking two courses focusing on political and economic transformation in Asia and the history of Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The group will spend six weeks at the National University of Singapore, four days in Malaysia and a week in Thailand. The students were selected from a pool of more than 150 applicants. The program is designed to inspire undergraduates to pursue additional international study, research, service or employment opportunities by engaging them in study abroad early in their college careers, said Daniel Gold, assistant director of study abroad for Asia and lecturer in Asian studies at UNC. An additional student, Caroline Fisher of Charlotte, is with the group as a program alumna research fellow. She participated in the program last summer and is returning to undertake an independent research project and help guide the new program participants.
