The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill chancellor told a crowd gathered at a popular campus meeting place Thursday to remember slain student body president Eve Carson by her dedication to serving her community. Chancellor Holden Thorp spoke to some 1,000 people meeting at the Pit to pay tribute to Carson, 22.

Students thank late student body president for lessons on leadership, life

Andrew Coonin remembers a conversation he had with his friend Eve Carson around the same time she won the race for UNC student body president. ...A year later Coonin decided to run for CAA president. "She was ecstatic," Coonin recalled on Thursday, the one-year anniversary of Carson's death. "Going the next step is what she helped teach me. I look at a lot of things as possibilities more than I did before." ..."That's something that I really took from Eve. Nothing is too big or too small" to deserve attention. It's a message that's getting significant airtime at UNC this month.

Triangle students among Morehead-Cain scholars

Twelve Triangle high school students are among the winners of Morehead-Cain Scholarships at UNC-Chapel Hill. The prestigious scholarship pays all expenses for four years of undergraduate study, including the cost of a laptop computer and four summer enrichment experiences. Its value is about $80,000 for each in-state student, and $140,000 for each out-of-state student.

UNC health care chief sees need for overhaul

With an overhaul of health care the topic of discussion Thursday at the White House, we talked with William L. Roper, chief executive of the UNC Health Care System and dean of the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine, about the prospects of changing the Americans health-care system. Roper, a public health expert who headed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the administration of George H.W. Bush, said he would like to see universal health coverage in some fashion -- he's not picky about the details. And he'd like to see it soon, he said, because the problem is growing dire.

Diabetes in youths higher than thought

Rates of diabetes are significantly higher than expected among children and adolescents from five ethnic and racial groups in the United States, according to findings by UNC-Chapel Hill researchers and others. The results are outlined in a supplement to the March issue of the journal Diabetes Care. The study examined non-Hispanic white, Hispanic, African-American, Asian and Pacific Islander and Navajo youth. Elizabeth Mayer-Davis, professor of nutrition in the UNC Gillings School of Global Health and the UNC School of Medicine, was the national study chairwoman.

Wilson Library Falls Short Of State Fire Codes

Bruce Runberg, associate vice chancellor for facilities planning and construction at UNC, said Wilson Library is still safe, despite fire code violations. Wilson Library is home to rare books, archival collections, and plenty of North Carolina history, but it does not meet state fire codes due to the lack of external stairways and a sprinkler system.

PlayMakers sets schedule for new season; artistic director honored

American Theatre magazine has named the producing artistic director of PlayMakers Repertory Company one of the top 25 theater artists in the nation who will shape the next 25 years. Joseph Haj, who has led the professional resident company at UNC Chapel Hill for the past two and a half years, announced his plans for the next year Thursday night at the UNC Center for Dramatic Art.
