North Carolina nets fifth title against Michigan State

North Carolina overwhelmed Michigan State with a record performance in the first half, and in the end the Tar Heels were dancing in the Motor City with their fifth NCAA Tournament title. With a championship-game record crowd of 72,922 at Ford Field and the majority of fans rooting for Michigan State, the Tar Heels swarmed the Spartans in the opening 20 minutes, and North Carolina added to its championship lore with a 89-72 win.

An estimated 30,000 fans rushed the downtown street of the village town when UNC beat Michigan State 89-72.

Tar Heels all contribute in NCAA championship win

As is tradition, every North Carolina player got the pleasure of climbing the ladder and snipping a section of the net after the Tar Heels claimed the NCAA championship Monday night. It seemed especially fitting because in the Tar Heels' convincing 89-72 triumph over Michigan State, it seemed like every member of the team had a piece of the victory.

Each time a door opened on Franklin Street Monday, a steady roar burst into the night. The pattern persisted for hours as UNC Chapel Hill fans took over the interiors of downtown Chapel Hill. ...All doors opened and the roar hurtled down Franklin into permanence just before midnight. With the NCAA championship firmly in hand, fans ran to the center of Franklin and Columbia streets where a mass of celebratory hysteria seemed to grow by the second.

Estimated 30,000 swarm Franklin Street

Following UNC's Monday night victory over Michigan State, students and fans headed to Franklin Street to celebrate. According to the The Chapel Hill Police Department, officers closed downtown streets to traffic after fans rushed to Franklin Street. The streets reopened around 1:50 a.m. and the lingering crowd cleared out between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m.

Clefs eye top 7 for Desai

It's been a nerve-racking couple of days for a group of current and former Clef Hangers, who in addition to the excitement of watching the Tar Heels playing for the national basketball championship, are hoping their friend and former Clef Anoop Desai makes it through another round on American Idol. Desai, 22, last year's president of UNC's oldest a cappella group, the Clef Hangers, has made it through to the final eight on the star-making television show, but it's been a struggle.

The University of North Carolina system has had such authority before.

State Senate rolls out $20B budget plan

The state Senate on Monday unveiled a budget plan that is $900 million less than what Gov. Beverly Perdue sought just three weeks ago. ...University of North Carolina President Erskine Bowles and North Carolina Community College System President Scott Ralls issued a joint statement in support of the Senate proposal, saying it provides needed support for worker training and job development.
