The Choir of King’s College London will perform masterpieces of the Spanish and English Renaissance in a concert Sept. 9 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The concert, which opens the 2009-2010 William S. Newman Artist Series in the music department, will be at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Tickets, available at the Memorial Hall Box Office at (919) 843-3333, are $15 general admission and $10 for UNC faculty, staff and students. The series, now in its 17th year, is dedicated to the memory of Newman (1912-2000), a music professor, historian and performing artist at UNC for three decades. “The Choir of King’s College London is a world-class ensemble,” said Susan Klebanow, M.A., professor and director of choral activities in the music department in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences. “They will provide the Carolina community with a rare opportunity to encounter the grand tradition of great British choral ensembles.” The Choir of King’s College London is one of the leading university choirs in England. Consisting of about 30 choral scholars and two organ scholars, it is directed by college organist, David Trendell, also a senior lecturer in the King’s music department. The choir performs a varied repertoire, ranging from the 14th century to the present day, and has made many celebrated recordings of 16th century English and Spanish music. In 2005, UNC signed a multi-level agreement that expanded the undergraduate exchange program with King’s College London to include graduate students and faculty. UNC undergraduates have studied at King’s since 2002; a formal exchange program began in 2004. For more information on the concert, call (919) 962-1039.
