On a remote South Pacific island visited by Mike Daisey, the inhabitants worship America as a source of power and plenty. From Sept. 16-20, PlayMakers Repertory Company, the professional theater in residence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will present Daisey in a one-man show about his journey. Daisey interweaves the poignant tale of the islanders’ cult religion, created in abandoned World War II military bases, with a penetrating examination of today’s global financial crisis. “The Last Cargo Cult” is part adventure story, part memoir, and an exploration of how money makes the world go round. His performance, “The Last Cargo Cult,” will open the theater’s 2009-10 PRC2 second-stage season, which presents topical, thought-provoking plays and post-show dialogs with the artists. Daisey will perform at 8 p.m. nightly Sept. 16-20 and 2 p.m. on Sept. 20 in the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre, inside UNC’s Center for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road. Tickets are $24 to $32 and may be purchased at www.playmakersrep.org , or by calling (919) 962-PLAY (7529). Daisey is “the master storyteller ... one of the finest solo performers of his generation,” a New York Times critic wrote. “A mesmerizing performer who spins words into comic and emotional gold,” reported an Oakland Tribune writer. “The Last Cargo Cult” played to sold-out houses as Daisey kicked off a national tour in Portland, Ore., and Seattle in early August. On Portland, an online magazine, called “Cult” “insightful and hilarious” and recommended, “If Mike Daisey finds his way into a city you’re in, you should jump on the opportunity to see him.” Rounding out the new PRC2 line-up will be “The Big Bang” by hip-hop troupe Universes (Jan. 13-17) and Sonja Linden’s “I Have Before Me a Remarkable Document Given to Me By a Young Lady From Rwanda” (March 24-28). PlayMakers’ main-stage season will open with the regional premiere of “Opus” Sept. 23 to Oct. 11. Visit www.playmakers.org or call (919) 962-PLAY (7529) for information and tickets for all shows. Based in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences, PlayMakers is the Carolinas’ premiere resident professional theater company. New York’s Drama League named PlayMakers one of the “best regional theatres in America.” Support for PlayMakers’ PRC2 series comes from the North Carolina Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
