A public presentation and reception will be held Oct. 14 (Wednesday) to showcase the Galapagos Initiative program being jointly developed by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador. Officials from both universities will introduce the initiative, which aims to improve understanding of the complex interactions in the islands between population, health and the environment. The Galapagos are recognized as an internationally acclaimed area, but has been designated by the United Nations as an “endangered” World Heritage Site. The event is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Mandela Auditorium, FedEx Global Education Center, Pittsboro Street, UNC campus. As part of the event, Pat Davison, associate professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, will present “Living Galapagos,” a student-produced multimedia exploration of the people and events shaping the social and ecological setting of the archipelago. The project shows life in the islands and in the footsteps of Darwin, as documented by Davison and his students, who together traveled there this past summer. A reception with refreshments will follow the public presentation.
