The application for the Eve Marie Carson Memorial Scholarship is now available to all University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill juniors with at least a 3.0 grade-point average. The deadline to apply is Nov. 24. The Eve Marie Carson Memorial Scholarship contributes to tuition expenses for the recipient’s senior year in addition to funding a summer experience. The selection committee, made up of UNC student and administration representatives, seeks individuals who are passionate and have flourished during their time at Carolina. The scholarship is merit-based; however, it will not be awarded to a student who is currently receiving a full scholarship. Applications are available at www.unc.edu/eve. Students are required to answer five questions as well as provide references from a professor and a UNC classmate. Additional materials will be required of the finalists. Information sessions will be held Oct. 27 and Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in 103 Bingham Hall. The scholarship was established in 2008 to commemorate and celebrate the life of former student body president Eve Marie Carson. She had envisioned a junior-year scholarship and included it in her platform for student body president in 2007. Her goal was to reward students who had grown significantly since their college matriculation. Last year’s recipient, Elinor Benami, is an economics major and environmental studies minor from Knoxville, Tenn. She traveled to the Middle East over the summer to intern with the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies. She worked on the institute’s trans-boundary environmental research and peace-building projects as well as pursued her own independent projects. Her efforts with the institute focused on co-developing a guide for rainwater harvesting, contributing to a socioeconomic baseline report for the western portion of the Arava Valley region, and aiding in grant proposal preparation and review.
