Indonesian textiles will be exhibited Nov. 3-15 at the FedEx Global Education Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A free public exhibit opening at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 3 will feature a talk plus Indonesian food and music.

“Indonesian Textiles: Culture, Traditions and Techniques,” will include cloths from several regions of the Far Eastern country that tell a story of Indonesian culture and traditions, said Stephanie Nelson, associate director of the Carolina Asia Center, sponsor of the exhibit and opening event. They also reveal information about geography, history, symbolism, superstitions and crafting techniques.

Exhibit curator Sally Kahler will speak at the opening, followed by exhibit viewing in the center’s Peacock Atrium and a reception featuring Indonesian food. Kahler lived in Indonesia and Hong Kong for 13 years and catalogued the National Museum of Jakarta’s textile collection.

During the reception, UNC students and faculty and community members will play the gamelan, a traditional Indonesian musical instrument consisting of separate instruments forged, cast and tuned as a single set in the workshop of one gong maker. UNC’s gamelan, Gamelan Nyai Saraswati, was donated to the University in 2000 and is named for its previous owner.
