Former Food and Drug Administration commissioner, Mark McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., will give a seminar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Thursday, Nov. 5. McClellan will also be on campus to receive the Award for Public Service from the Institute for Pharmacogenomics and Individualized Therapy in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. The award honors a person who has made significant contributions to advancing rational drug-therapy initiatives. Howard McLeod, Pharm.D., the institute’s director, said the award acknowledged McClellan’s advocacy of pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine throughout his career. “Dr. McClellan has been willing to lead by example, making policy that puts the individual patient in a place of priority,” said McLeod, also Fred Eshelman Distinguished Professor of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics and a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. “The fact that the FDA and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services take pharmacogenomics seriously has caused medical practice to follow suit.” The seminar and award presentation is at 4 p.m. in the Blue Cross Blue Shield Auditorium of the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. A reception will immediately follow. McClellan, a medical doctor and economist, is currently director of the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at the Brookings Institution.
