Folklorist Archie Green will be remembered in a daylong symposium and evening concert Nov. 21 at the Wilson Special Collections Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Green, who died in March at age 91, played a central role in establishing the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC’s Wilson Special Collections Library. He also donated his papers, recordings and correspondence to the collection. Green was a shipwright and union activist before studying and teaching at the University of Illinois. “Archie paved the way for a new kind of study of American workers as people with a rich history and culture,” said Steve Weiss, head of the Southern Folklife Collection. “Folklore is a study of the way we live – our lives, culture, beliefs and traditions.” Green came to Chapel Hill in the 1980s when invited to evaluate Carolina’s folklore curriculum. He persuaded the University to increase funding for the curriculum and create the folklife collection in the library, Weiss said. The memorial symposium, “Work’s Many Voices,” will pay tribute to Green’s interest in the life, culture and art of workers in the United States. For a schedule and more information, visit http://www.lib.unc.edu/ and click “Symposium.” The concert, at 6:30 p.m., will be by ballad singer Elizabeth LaPrelle, old-time musicians Stephen Wade and Mike Craver and string band the New North Carolina Ramblers.
