Researchers John D. Kasarda and James H. Johnson Jr. of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will brief the media on results of the first comprehensive study of the economic impact of African Americans in the state of North Carolina. It details the impact of African American spending and employment, state government costs for education, health care and corrections, and ways North Carolina can better capitalize economically on its significant African American population. Panelists for the discussion are Johnson, director of the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprises’ Urban Investment Strategies Center; Andrea Harris, president, N.C. Institute of Minority Economic Development, major funder of the study; Rev. William Barber, president of the N.C. Conference NAACP; Julius Chambers, attorney, former chancellor of North Carolina Central University and current director of the Center for Civil Rights at the UNC School of Law; and Julianne Malveaux, president of Bennett College for Women.
