Simple interventions up parental accuracy of kids’ weight
The Times of India

In a new study, some simple interventions helped change a parent's perspective about a child's being overweight or obese, and change the parent's behaviors at home to reduce those risks. According to a study performed in North Carolina Children’s Hospital, researchers confirmed previous reports that parents of overweight or obese children do not recognize their child’s weight problem. ...“Doctors often don’t have time to discuss overweight; they don’t have the tools to do it; and many aren’t confident that they’re going to make a difference in their patients’ lives,” Eliana Perrin, assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and lead author of the study, said.

The New York Times

A Business section article looks at how the recession is affecting the millennial generation, and how it might continue to influence them far into the future. After reading the article, how, in general, do you think this generation will be affected by the recession? Do you think achieving the classic “American Dream” is still possible for young people? ...The Great Depression damaged the self-confidence of the young, and that is beginning to happen now, according to pollsters, sociologists and economists. Young men in particular lost a sense of direction, Glen H. Elder Jr., a sociologist at the University of North Carolina, found in his study, “Children of the Great Depression.” In some cases they were forced into work they did not want — the issue for Scott Nicholson.

Haiti earthquake: Six months later, are relief efforts dragging?
The Christian Science Monitor

Six months after the catastrophic 7.0-magnitude Haiti earthquake, signs of progress show that the outpouring of donations from the US government, households, and organizations played a major role in helping the relief effort. ..."The reason so many dollars funneled down there so quickly was because we already had a system in place," says professor Bill Gentry, director of the community preparedness and disaster management program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, referring to the many nonprofit organizations and agencies that were already in Haiti.

North Carolina linebacker Kevin Reddick and defensive lineman Mike McAdoo awoke in a hotel this morning after their Durham apartment was destroyed by fire Saturday. ...In the middle of an otherwise unremarkable afternoon, Reddick thought his pizza had arrived. Just out of the shower, that banging noise had to be the deliveryman knocking at the door. “I just happened to look outside,” Reddick said. “I’m not sure what told me to look, but I saw shingles coming off the roof. I thought someone was working on the roof, so I didn’t pay any mind, but as I was closing the blinds, I saw fire out the window. I grabbed my shoes and left.”
