From its beginnings in a small room in the President’s house to today’s modern facilities, the University Library is at the crux of Carolina’s development as a major research institution. Drawing from the rich collections of University history in Wilson Library, this exhibit documents the growth and history of the University libraries. Yoga in the Galleries

Art Adventures: MFA = My Favorite Art

Designed for 6- to 9-year-olds, Art Adventures sessions provide kids with a guided view of art in the Ackland’s galleries, followed by the opportunity to create take-home treasures in an adjacent art studio using newly learned art-making techniques. This month, Art Adventures explores the most contemporary of contemporary art: the Ackland’s exhibition of work by graduating UNC – Chapel Hill master of fine arts students. Watercolor Workshop

Following a guided exploration of Thornton Dial’s works on paper, participants will try their hand at watercolors in a nearby studio. Beginners are welcome. Yoga at the Garden

Enjoy the benefits of a mindful yoga practice - emphasizing relaxation and restoration - in the Growing Classroom of the new Education Center. Tea at Two: Regionalism, Realism and Mark Twain

Ackland Film Forum: ‘Junebug’

Screening at the Varsity Theatre
A dealer in “outsider” art travels from Chicago to North Carolina to meet her new in-laws, challenging the equilibrium of this middle-class Southern home. This film is shown in connection with the Ackland Art Museum’s exhibitions “Thornton Dial: Thoughts on Paper” and “Piece by Piece: Quilts, Collages and Constructions,” both on view March 30-July1. Drawing in the Galleries

Amanda Hughes, director of external affairs, leads participants in a creative exploration of drawings by Thornton Dial as they sketch their own works on paper. Bring paper and dry media such as crayon or pencils. All levels are welcome. For more information, visit http://www.ackland.org.

This program invites 10- to 13-year-olds to look at artists’ techniques in the Ackland’s permanent collections and special exhibitions. Crazy for Quilts: An Ackland-Kidzu Collaboration

Ackland Art Museum
This program for 4- to 8-year-olds will investigate paintings, quilts, collages and photographs on view at the Ackland, exploring how artists use colors, shapes and all kinds of materials to make beautiful art. Participants then head to Kidzu Children’s Museum to make bookmarks and collaborate on a quilt for display at Kidzu. Registration costs $5 per child. Process Series: ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’

The play, inspired by the newest breakthroughs in neuroscience, creates a society that is complex, repressed and verging on domestic violence. This is part of the Process Series, in which professional authors and playwrights present their works in progress and afterward receive critiques from the audience. Music in the Galleries: The Carrborators

The Carrborators are a quartet that delivers a blend of folk, rock and jazz influences in true Americana style. The music features layered vocal harmonies intertwined with a mix of flatpicking and finger-styled guitars, mandolin, dobro, harmonica and bass. The Carrborators hail from Carrboro. Wilson Library, Melba Remig Saltarelli Exhibit Room

A selection of the 16th- and 17th-century English and Continental books from the Rare Book Collection explores early modern understanding of nature and the unnatural in Shakespeare’s time. The exhibition includes herbals, natural histories, travel accounts, agricultural works, cosmetics manuals, books on magic and witchcraft, and Shakespeare folios. It is presented in conjunction with the conference, “Shakespeare and the Natural World,” sponsored by the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Southern Roots, Enduring Bonds: African American Families in North Carolina

This exhibit highlights several African American families in North Carolina, many of which have long and deep roots in the state that span generations. From the 19th-century letters of Dr. Manassa Pope in Raleigh to Grigsby Family Reunion programs in the late 20th century, these materials illustrate the strength of African American families as well as the larger black community and how they have persisted and endured across time and place.
