Sixty-six of the brightest and most dedicated students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were honored Wednesday (April 11) with the University’s most prestigious awards for academic achievement and leadership in activities. Chancellor Holden Thorp presided at the annual Chancellor’s Awards ceremony, in which Executive Associate Provost Ron Strauss presented academic awards and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp presented service and leadership awards. Three students, all seniors, won two awards apiece. Morgan Parker Abbott of Raleigh won an award for outstanding in leadership, character and scholarship and another for unselfish interest in human welfare. Jonathan Bratton McCay of Winston-Salem won an award for unique leadership in student government and for contributing to the continued vitality and strength of the Honor Code in the community. Benjamin Mintz Elkind of Silver Spring won an award for using faith to inspire outstanding service to the needs of humanity and a second for multicultural leadership. The awards, which vary from certificates to plaques to cash, were created by donors. Student recipients, their parents and awards are listed below, with North Carolina winners first by hometown followed by out-of-state winners. Richardson Preyer Award for Excellence in Political Science, to a senior judged by a faculty committee to have established the most distinguished record of scholarship in political science and community service. Asheville *Laurel Anne Ashton, daughter of Eleanor Ashton of Asheville and Jeff Ashton of Weaverville: the Frank Porter Graham Award, to the senior who has made the most outstanding contribution to realization of the human ideals of equality, dignity and community. Belmont Caitlin Murray Goforth, daughter of Roy and Dona Goforth of Belmont: the E. Eugene Jackson Award, to the member of the graduating class whose leadership and selfless dedication have strengthened class pride and University loyalty, enriched the lives of seniors and made a significant contribution to the University. Candler Rose Emory Lambert-Sluder, daughter of Lan Sluder and Sheila Lambert of Candler: the Louis D. Rubin Jr. Prize in Creative Writing, to the outstanding fiction writer in the senior class. Carrboro *Camila Antonia Salvo-Lewis, daughter of Virginia Lewis of Carrboro and Carlos Salvo of Chapel Hill: the James M. Johnston Distinguished Senior Award in the Nursing Program, to a senior in the Johnston Nursing Awards Program for outstanding achievement and leadership contributions in the School of Nursing and the Johnston program. Cary Kira Anne Lumsden, daughter of Robert Longo and Cynthia Peters-Longo of Cary: the Rob Park Memorial Award, to a member of the senior class who has made a significant contribution by improving education and community service programming to assist undergraduate students in learning about the legal system, the rigors of a legal education and the changing nature of the legal profession. Heather Alice Robertson, daughter of Debora Osuna and Ian Robertson of Cary: the Roger A. Davis Memorial Award, to the undergraduate judged to have given outstanding service to the university, especially through residence hall leadership. William Arthur Schlieper III, son of William Arthur and Mary Anne Schlieper of Cary: the Archibald Henderson Mathematics Medal, to the undergraduate judged by the mathematics department to have demonstrated a high degree of mathematical ability and the greatest promise of originality in the field. Edina Cindy Wang, daughter of Jennifer Wu and Eric Wang of Cary: the Chi Omega Award for Scholarship and Leadership, to the senior student in the department of psychology chosen as most outstanding in scholastic achievement and exemplary leadership. Charlotte Emma Christine Pham, daughter of Jane C. Pham of Charlotte: the Willie P. Mangum Medal in Oratory, to the senior who, in the opinion of judges, gives the best oration at an annual contest.
