Pricier therapy no better for early prostate cancer

A new study suggests that expensive, high-tech proton beam radiation doesn't do any more for men with prostate cancer than the most commonly-used option. ...Dr. Ronald Chen of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his colleagues used data from a nationwide cancer registry covering treatment records for men insured by Medicare who were diagnosed with prostate cancer starting in 2000.

Last Thursday, Fox News chairman/CEO Roger Ailes made a mean-spirited comment about CNN’s Soledad O’Brien while speaking to journalism students at the University of North Carolina. During an after-lecture interview with student journalists, Ailes referred to O'Brien -- who anchors the CNN morning news show "Starting Point" -- as "that girl that's named after a prison."

Campaign Denies Gingrich Left Student Reporter’s Interview (Blog)

Reports swirled Monday that Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich left an interview with a student reporter at a rally in Greensboro, N.C., over a question he did not want to respond to. The reporter, Memet Walker, wrote a column in the University of North Carolina’s student paper The Daily Tarheel Monday, claiming Gingrich left the interview before he could even finish the first question.

High school football brain injuries increasing

Catastrophic brain injuries among high school football players appear to be increasing, according to data collected by the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research at the University of North Carolina. ...“This is a major problem,” said Dr. Fred Mueller, the report’s lead author, director of the center and professor emeritus of exercise and sports science in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Catastrophic Brain Injuries From Football Rising

As football season nears for high school students, a new study is sure to raise concerns about the safety of the game. Monday, researchers at UNC Chapel Hill said catastrophic brain injuries associated with full-contact football appear to be rising, especially among high school students.

Fundraiser for organ transplants planned in memory of UNC mascot Jason Ray

The Jason Ray Foundation will hold a fundraiser on April 29 to benefit patients who have had organ transplants. The foundation was started in memory of Jason Ray, who was a University of North Carolina mascot. In 2007 Ray was hit by a car and died from his injuries while he was with the UNC men's basketball team at the NCAA regional games in New Jersey.

UNC reporter rebuffed? (Under the Dome)

The Daily Tar Heel reports that a staffer for Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich blocked a reporter from asking a questions about Roger Ailes. The reporter for UNC-Chapel Hill’s independent, student-run daily paper said he was also briefly detained by Gingrich’s Secret Service detail.

As an officer of the campus chapter of the American Association of University Professors, I appreciate coverage of SB 575 in “UNC board adopts worker guidelines.” UNC System President Tom Ross’ actions will undermine UNC staff at a time of high unemployment. Faculty have spoken against his proposal to remove 22,000 UNC employees from the State Personnel Act in public events. (Altha Cravey, Carrboro)

Chapel Hill Planning Board pans draft CH 2020 plan (Blog)

The CH 2020 draft comprehensive plan needs more information, more input from UNC and more transparency, according to Chapel Hill’s Planning Board. Planning Board members met for nearly five hours April 7 to discuss CH 2020 during a special Saturday work session. The group presented a list of concerns to staff, noting the plan's lack of “clarity, focus, strategic thinking, and prioritization.”
