University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp released the following statement on the recent passing of Doris Betts, author and UNC Alumni Distinguished Professor Emerita:
“The South has lost one of its most distinctive voices with the passing of Doris Betts. She leaves behind a rich literary legacy, many friends who mourn her and hundreds of writers who developed their talent in her classes. The Doris Betts Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing position continues her life's work as a gifted writer willing to unselfishly share that gift and nurture it in others."
