Carolina ranks 4th in Washington Monthly’s ‘What Colleges Can Do For You’ List E-mail
Tuesday, August 28, 2012

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranks fourth among national universities in The Washington Monthly’s 2012 College Rankings, “What Colleges Can Do for You.”

The rankings are posted at http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/college_guide/rankings_2012/

.

Washington Monthly editors use ratings assessing how colleges and universities contribute to the public good in three broad categories:  social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.D.s), and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

The rankings factor in data from categories including number of students receiving Pell grants, net price, predicted and actual graduation rates, research expenditures, bachelor’s degree to Ph.D.s awarded, science and engineering Ph.D.s awarded, faculty receiving significant award and faculty in national academies.  Service categories included Peace Corps participation rankings, ROTC participation rankings, federal work study funds spent on service, community service participation and hours served, and a service staff, courses and financial aid support rank.

Topping the overall national university list was the University of California at San Diego, followed by Texas A&M University and Stanford University. Following UNC-Chapel Hill at fifth was the University of California at Berkeley,  the University of California at Los Angeles, 6th; Case Western Reserve University, 7th; the University of Washington at Seattle, 8th; the University of California at Riverside, 9th; and Georgia Institute of Technology, 10th.

UNC-Chapel Hill ranked 12th on The Monthly’s 2011 annual list.

Do your kids love chocolate milk? It may have more calories on average than you thought. Same goes for soda.
Until now, the only way to find out what people in the United States eat and how many calories they consume has been government data, which can lag behind the rapidly expanding and changing food marketplace. Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are trying to change that by creating a gargantuan map of what foods Americans are buying and eating.
