Note: News release about the festival Artist information The schedule for the 2008 Carolina Jazz Festival, Feb. 27 to March 1 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is: Feb. 27 Meet the Artists: Concert and Conversation, 4 p.m., Hill Hall Auditorium. Festival artists in residence Greg Gisbert, trumpet; Victor Goines, tenor saxophone and clarinet; and Herlin Riley, drums, will join UNC music department faculty members James Ketch, trumpet; Stephen Anderson, piano; John Brown, bass; and Thomas Taylor, drums, in conversation and a jam session. Free. Feb. 28 North Carolina Regional Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Festival, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Frank Porter Graham Student Union and Cabaret. High school jazz bands and combos will perform and take clinics with professional jazz musicians who are festival artists in residence and with Carolina faculty jazz musicians. Free and open for observation by the public. Feb. 28 “Jazz Cities on Parade,” concert, 7:30 p.m., Memorial Hall. The North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra will perform selections that reflect the jazz styles of American cities including New Orleans, Chicago, Kansas City, Los Angeles and New York City. David Hartman, actor and former host of ABC’s “Good Morning, America” will be onstage to narrate the musical tour. Central, N.C. State and other Triangle universities are expected to participate. Local jazz musicians are invited as well. Free. March 1 Small Group Jazz Workshop, noon to 2 p.m., 107 Hill Hall. Guest artists Greg Gisbert, Victor Goines and Herlin Riley and Carolina jazz faculty will direct UNC jazz students in the workshop. Free and open for observation by the public. March 1 UNC Jazz Combos, 4 p.m., 107 Hill Hall. The UNC Jazz Combos will perform with festival artists in residence Greg Gisbert, Victor Goines and Herlin Riley. Free. March 1 SFJAZZ Collective, 8 p.m., Memorial Hall. The octet will perform selections written by the late tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter and new works by collective members.
