Sounds from Indonesia, Cuba and Ghana will be part of a World Music Concert from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday (April 19) in the FedEx Global Education Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The center will then host two films that reflect on the legacy of colonialism and the challenges of integration and assimilation of immigrant populations in France. The program premiered at ArteEast’s 2007 CinemaEast Film Festival in New York. For more information, visit www.arteeast.org .

Belly dancing and Dabka lessons, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday (April 24) and a concert by a traditional Chinese music ensemble, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday (April 25) will round out programming for the global center this academic year.

All events are free to the public in the center, at McCauley and Pittsboro streets, with limited parking behind the center and in a small deck under the center, both off McCauley.

In the concert, visitors will hear Gamelan Nyai Saraswati, a set of instruments from the Central Javanese court tradition, and see Charanga Carolina, UNC’s ensemble specializing in Cuban danzón and New York-style salsa music. UNC’s Ghanaian drumming group also will perform.

A hands-on Ghanaian drumming workshop and a salsa lesson also will be offered. No previous experience is required for the free workshop and lesson.

The Carolina Seminar Program and the music department in the College of Arts and Sciences will sponsor the concert. Food will be available for purchase in the Global Cup Cafe. A concert poster is available at http://www.global.unc.edu/images/world-music-concert.pdf .
