Turntables, technology and music theory will collide when Paul D. Miller, better known as DJ Spooky, “That Subliminal Kid,” presents a lecture-demonstration at 3 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Great Hall of UNC’s Frank Porter Graham Student Union. The free public program will precede the world premiere performance of his “Video Soul: Wattstax to the Avant Garde” at 8 p.m. Feb. 9 at Duke University. During his multimedia presentation at UNC, Miller will use historical texts and rare audio and film recordings to illustrate the history of digital art and media. Using the DJ’s mix as a template, he will discuss how today’s artists can rearrange the cultural ideas and objects that bombard us to produce something new and expressive. Miller will also discuss technology’s impact on DJ culture and the issues that arise from it, such as intellectual property rights and ownership of ideas. UNC units sponsoring the lecture-demo include: the art department, University Program in Cultural Studies, School of Information and Library Science’s Open Video Project, Carolina Union Activities Board, Carolina Free Culture and ibiblio.org, a contributor-run digital library and archive based at UNC. Additional support from the English department and a grant from the Performing Arts and Special Activities Fund in the office of the executive vice chancellor and provost.
