Eighteen large color photographs of lower New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina will be on exhibit June 5 through Aug. 15 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The exhibit, “Lower Ninth Ward, New Orleans,” will be free to the public at the Love House and Hutchins Forum, 410 E. Franklin St. The facility houses the exhibit sponsor, the UNC Center for the Study of the American South. Visitors can meet the photographer, John Rosenthal of Chapel Hill, at the exhibit from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on June 5. “What I found and photographed wasn’t simply the remnants of a dilapidated and dangerous neighborhood now demolished by a hurricane, but the vestiges of a working-class community in which aspiration contended with scarcity, and where religious faith found expression on every block,” Rosenthal said. A special Katrina issue of Southern Cultures, the center’s journal, will be available at the meet-the-artist event. The issue contains personal accounts of the hurricane’s aftermath and government involvement. The show will be part of the July 11th Chapel Hill-Carrboro 2ndFriday Artwalk, a multiple-gallery art showcase held once a month from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Love House and Hutchins Forum is open from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursdays.
