Have you ever wondered how the cold, dry and often dark continent of Antarctica might sound if given its own soundtrack?

Music professors Brooks de Wetter-Smith and Allen Anderson of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will seek to answer that question in “Iceblink,” April 26 and April 27 at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh.

A multimedia work, “Iceblink” is a 40-minute piece featuring a chamber orchestra, soprano and narrator complementing the projection of hundreds of images of Antarctica. Wetter-Smith took the photos during a 2006 visit to the icy continent with a National Geographic group. Anderson, a composer, and flutist de Wetter-Smith collaborated to blend music, words and images to highlight the spectacular continent.

“Iceblink” will premiere at 3 p.m. April 27. The public may attend an open rehearsal at 3 p.m. April 26. Both performances will be preceded by a 2 p.m. discussion. All the events will be in the auditorium of the science museum, located at 11 W. Jones Street in Raleigh.

Tickets for both events may be purchased in advance from the N.C. Museum of Art Box Office (not the science museum) at (919) 715-5923 or www.ncartmuseum.org, and at the door before the performances. Tickets via the art museum Web site or phone line, for nonmembers of the museum, are $8 for the rehearsal and $13 for the performance, or $18 for both.
