More than 980 campus and community members sought to give blood at the 20th annual Carolina Blood Drive on June 3 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – 210 of them first-time donors. Falling just short of its 1,000-unit goal, the drive collected 966 useable units – up 126 from last year – which will become 2,898 blood products that help the sick and injured across North Carolina. Before the drive, a public service announcement promoting the event, recorded by head men's basketball coach Roy Williams, went by telephone to more than 4,000 area households. UNC mascot Rameses, head football coach Butch Davis, some of his players and legendary UNC basketball coach Dean Smith all visited the drive to encourage and thank donors. Door prizes were two tickets to UNC’s home football opener vs. McNeese State on Aug. 30, a football autographed by Davis and tickets to the Bank of America 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord on Oct. 11.
