Peter White, director of the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, will lead a special tour of the garden’s grounds and trails in conjunction with Earth Day. This peak-of-spring tour allows participants to view the blossoming landscape of native trees, shrubs and wildflowers.

White, who is also a professor of biology in UNC-Chapel Hill’s College of Arts and Sciences, will lead the tour at 10 a.m. on Saturday (April 26). Although registration is not required, it is advisable to call (919) 962-0522 ahead to reserve a place.

The Growing Green Earth Day Tour will help visitors discover the significance of native flora to the life cycle and will showcase the green construction project currently underway on the Botanical Garden’s grounds: A new 29,656-square-foot Visitor Center designed to receive the highest rating for sustainably constructed buildings from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building incorporates systems and materials designed to minimize environmental impact and support human health, including rainwater cisterns, solar water heating and natural lighting.
