Local journalists to discuss reporting on military conflicts E-mail

Triangle-based former war correspondents Dick Gordon and Jay Price will kick off a new series of informal dialogues sponsored by the Journalism Alumni and Friends Association at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 23.

Gordon, host of American Public Media’s “The Story,” and Price, a reporter for The News & Observer of Raleigh, will discuss their experiences covering conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan at 6 p.m. in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The free public talk will be in the Freedom Forum Conference Center in UNC’s Carroll Hall.

Gordon was a foreign correspondent and regular fill-in host for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s national radio program “This Morning.” He now hosts American Public Media’s “The Story,” which is produced at WUNC-FM/North Carolina Public Radio.

Price is a general assignment and military affairs reporter for The News & Observer. He has worked as a reporter four times in Iraq and five in Afghanistan. Price also has reported military, travel and economics stories from Chile, Uganda, Kurdistan, Kuwait, Mexico, Guatemala, Vietnam and Italy.

Price’s stories have been part of team efforts nominated four times for the Pulitzer Prize. He has won nearly 20 state and national awards, including first place in the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Awards for a series on four U.S. security contractors killed in Fallujah in 2004.

UNC-CH to install Chancellor Holden Thorp

The new chancellor of UNC-Chapel Hill is expected to talk about his plans for the university at an installation ceremony Sunday during University Day festivities. Chancellor Holden Thorp's installation ceremony, which is open to the public, starts at 3 p.m. in Polk Place, between South Building and Wilson Library.
