Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Media representatives are invited to join the 2008 Tar Heel Bus Tour for a stop Wednesday in Hendersonville. The privately funded tour, which continues through Friday (May 16), is taking 36 new UNC-Chapel Hill faculty members across the state to learn about its people, economy, environment, culture and history.

Wednesday (May 14)
3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Sammy Williams Center for Active Living
301 N. Justice St., Hendersonville

New faculty members will visit a senior center to meet community partners in Walk Wise, Drive Smart. This program is a collaboration between the City of Hendersonville and the Program on Aging at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. More than 31 percent of Hendersonville’s population is age 65 and older. The University and the city have worked since 2000 to make Hendersonville more accommodating to its elder population. The Walk Wise, Drive Smart program helped create a safer and more inviting walking community by developing senior-friendly walking routes in neighborhoods. Bus tour participants will have the chance to walk the newly opened 1-mile Walk Wise, Drive Smart route that is adjacent to the center.
