The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill placed third overall in the 48th Hearst Journalism Awards intercollegiate competition, known as the Pulitzers of college journalism. The journalism school has placed in the top five for the last three years. Carolina’s journalism students placed first in broadcast news, first in multimedia and fifth in photojournalism. Four journalism students placed in the individual national championships. Walter Storholt, a rising senior from Pine Knoll Shores, placed third in radio broadcast news and received a $3,000. John Adkisson, a rising junior from Charlotte, was a semi-finalist in photojournalism and received a $1,000 award; Jennifer Carpenter, a rising senior from Raleigh, was a semi-finalist in television broadcast news and received a $1,000 award; and Julia Ritchey, a May 2008 graduate from Hendersonville, was a semi-finalist in radio broadcast news and received a $1,000 award. Finalists traveled to San Francisco, Calif., from May 31 to June 5 to demonstrate their writing, photography, radio and television skills in rigorous on-the-spot assignments. The Hearst Journalism Awards Program, founded in 1960, provides support, encouragement and assistance to journalism education at the college and university level by providing scholarships to students for outstanding performance in college level journalism. The program also gives matching grants to the student’s school. To participate, undergraduate journalism majors enrolled in 108 accredited colleges or universities must be actively involved in campus media and have published articles, photographs or produced newscasts or multimedia pieces that can be submitted to the competition. The William Randolph Hearst Foundation was established by publisher William Randolph Hearst in 1948 under California non-profit laws, exclusively for educational and charitable purposes.
