As the first person in her family to attend an institution of higher learning, Mary Lynn Eubanks knows the value of a good college education.

Eubanks, who lives in Highland Park, Ill., grew up and graduated from Asheboro High School in Asheboro, N.C. She went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, graduating in 1980 with a bachelor of arts degree in English. She then earned a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1983. That degree launched a career as an attorney – she practiced until 1996, when she left to stay home with her children.

Her experiences as a first-generation college student inspired Eubanks and her husband, Francisco Roque, to establish at Carolina the Mary Lynn Eubanks and Francisco A. Roque Scholarship Fund for students with financial need.

“Going to college totally changed my life and opened my world,” said Mary Lynn Eubanks, whose parents and brother and his family still live in Asheboro. “But it is a very hard thing to be the first person in your family to go to college. Hopefully this scholarship will make things easier for someone from my hometown; UNC will offer a wide opportunity, with broad educational choices for students.”

In addition to needing financial help, the recipients of these awards must be first-generation college students – from a family in which a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university has not been earned – and demonstrate high scholastic ability.

UNC will determine the selection of recipients, including the number and dollar amount of each scholarship awarded. A total of about $1,250 will be awarded each year.

Preference for the scholarship will be given first to students from Asheboro. If scholarships cannot be awarded to students from Asheboro, second priority will be given to students from Randolph County, where Asheboro is located. Last preference will go to students from the south central region of North Carolina.

The first awards from the Mary Lynn Eubanks and Francisco A. Roque Scholarship Fund will go to students enrolling for the fall 2008 semester. Admitted students who have financial need, meet the geographic preference and are first-generation college students will be considered for the scholarship.
