Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer José Galvez will present his work Oct. 25 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The free, public event in Carroll Hall’s Freedom Forum Conference Center (Room 305) is presented by the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the UNC Latina/o Cultures Speakers Series, and the UNC Latina/o Studies Gift Fund. Galvez’s talk – “Images of Self – Then and Now” – will cover his more than 35 years documenting the lives of Latinos in the United States. Now living in Durham, Galvez travels the country discovering the new Latino communities flourishing in the South and Midwest. His career includes work at the Los Angeles Times, where he led a photo staff that, along with a team of reporters, won a Pulitzer Prize for a series on the Latino experiences in Southern California. The Smithsonian is among the museums and galleries that have exhibited his work, and he served as senior photo editor and contributor to Americanos, a multimedia exhibition documenting the lives of Latinos in the United States.
