The Society of American Historians has honored scholars Philip Gura and William Leuchtenburg in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s College of Arts and Sciences for their excellence in historical writing.
Gura has been tapped as a fellow of the society “in recognition of the literary and scholarly distinction of his historical writing.” Leuchtenburg is the first recipient of the Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. Award “for distinguished writing in American history of enduring public significance.” The award will be presented jointly by the society and the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute.

Gura, the William S. Newman Distinguished Professor of American Literature and Culture, was a nonfiction finalist for the 2007 National Book Critics Circle Award for his book “American Transcendentalism: A History.” In the book, Gura paints an accessible, comprehensive narrative history of the Transcendentalists, American intellectuals and reformers in the 19th century.

Gura has been teaching at UNC since 1987 and holds faculty appointments in English, American studies and religious studies.

Leuchtenburg, William Rand Kenan Jr. Professor Emeritus of History, is the nation’s leading authority on Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was lured to North Carolina by the National Humanities Center and served for 20 years at UNC before retiring in 2002.

Leuchtenburg is the author of more than a dozen books on 20th-century American history, including the prize-winning “Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal, 1932-1940” and “The White House Looks South: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson.” He is the first scholar to be elected president of all three major historical organizations: the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians and the Society of American Historians.
