Immigration in the local community will be the topic of discussions and a film Sunday (April 20) and April 27 in the FedEx Global Education Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Collectively titled “Addressing the Hard Questions: Community Series on Immigration Issues,” the free, public events will be presented by the UNC Institute for the Study of the Americas, with funding from the UNC Institute for Global Initiatives. From 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Sunday (April 20), Irene Godínez, advocacy director for the community group El Pueblo, will lead a discussion on the impact of immigration on area schools, looking at issues including test scores, dropout rates and gangs in the schools and the community. The film “La Vida no Es Facil” from 4:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. will be screened. The video-maker’s son, Torin Martinez, will speak. Then film students from Pa’lante will discuss their experiences with U.S. education. Pa’lante is a Spanish language media program that involves youth in integrating Latin American immigrants into the community. The series will conclude with a discussion from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. April 27, “Politics and Immigration,” by local political scientists, politicians, and representatives from community organizations. The FedEx Global Education Center is at the corner of Pittsboro and McCauley streets, with limited parking behind the building and in a deck under the building, both off McCauley.
