Media representatives are invited to join the 2008 Tar Heel Bus Tour for a stop Monday (May 12) in Rocky Mount. The privately funded tour, May 12-16, will take 36 new UNC-Chapel Hill faculty members across the state to learn about its people, economy, environment, culture and history. Monday (May 12) 8:45 to 10:30 a.m. Dudley’s Beauty Salon 651 Tiffany Boulevard, Rocky Mount New Carolina faculty members will visit a hair salon that is part of the Breaking Free! project, in which hair stylists are trained to talk with their customers about breast cancer and distribute information about mammograms and breast exams. Carolina Community Network, based at UNC-Chapel Hill, has partnered with Crossworks Inc., a faith-based nonprofit, to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention techniques in the black community in Edgecombe and Nash counties. The project is based in the community, targeting both individuals and groups, networking through local beauty salons and other venues that serve black women in an effort to promote breast cancer awareness and prevention. Faculty members will meet participating stylists and community representatives at Dudley’s Beauty Salon. Because Cassandra Williams, owner of the salon, encouraged one of her employees to get a mammogram through the program, the employee’s cancer was caught early and successfully treated.
