Sustainable settlement to be lecture topic E-mail

Saskia Sassen, Ph.D., of Columbia University will speak about sustainable human settlement and the global economy on Feb. 4 at UNC. Her talk, “The Border in a Global Economy,” will be free to the public at 8 p.m. in the FedEx Global Education Center, at the corner of McCauley and Pittsboro streets.
Sassen recently completed a five-year UNESCO project on sustainable human settlement for which she set up a network of researchers and activists in more than 30 countries. Her books include “Territory, Authority, Rights: From Medieval to Global Assemblages” (Princeton University Press, 2006) and “A Sociology of Globalization” (Norton, 2007). Her UNC talk is sponsored by Phi Beta Kappa and the Center for Global Initiatives.
