Bennett College President Julianne Malveaux, Ph.D., will give this year’s Sonja Haynes Stone Memorial Lecture April 8 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The free public talk honors the namesake of UNC’s Stone Center for Black Culture and History – and her legacy. It will be at the at 7 p.m. in the Hitchcock Multipurpose Room of the center, located at 150 South Road just west of the Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower. The event will constitute, which features a black woman whose work, scholarship and community service mirrors that of Stone. The late Stone, Ph.D., a UNC professor and director of UNC’s African and Afro-American studies curricula from 1974 until 1979, was an advocate for the center. Malveaux, an economist, author and commentator, has appeared on national television networks including BET and CNN. Her weekly columns appear in newspapers across the country including the Los Angeles Times, the Detroit Free Press and the Charlotte Observer. Previous speakers have included scholar and political activist Angela Davis, former U.S. Rep. Eva Clayton, law professor and former Black Panther Kathleen Cleaver, activist, writer and producer Atallah Shabazz and actress Alfre Woodard. For more information, call the center at (919) 962-9001.
