The William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education presented the 2014 Friday Center Excellence in Teaching Award to Tessa Joseph Nicholas in recognition of her consistent dedication and commitment to the highest standards in her work with the Friday Center’s programs and students.

Nicholas teaches an introduction to poetry writing class and a course on computers and society for the Friday Center, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s center for continuing education.

Nominators noted Nicholas’ passion for online teaching and the fact that she regularly incorporates new instructional technologies into her courses that enable students to enhance their own learning processes. “Before each semester, Dr. Nicholas updates her course materials … to reflect the latest thinking on each topic,” wrote one nominator.

Nicholas also “supports her students throughout the semester, encouraging them to form a community of scholars who share their learning discoveries through writing, hearing, seeing creating, and reviewing each other’s work,” wrote a person who nominated her.

The Friday Center has given the Excellence in Teaching Award annually since 2003. A permanent plaque at the Friday Center lists every recipient.
