Instructions for media covering Dean Smith Celebration on Feb. 22 at Smith Center

(Chapel Hill, N.C. – Feb. 16, 2015) – The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will remember Coach Dean Smith and celebrate his life at a public memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, in the Smith Center. UNC-TV will provide pool video and audio feeds to TV and radio stations covering the service. The program will feature remarks from several of Coach Smith’s lettermen, close friends and coaching colleagues. Chancellor Carol L. Folt and Woody Durham, former Tar Heel sports announcer, will moderate the event. There also will be video tributes, special performances by Carolina musical groups and the UNC-Chapel Hill Band.


To secure parking, credentials and seating at the Celebration, media representatives should RSVP no later than noon on Thursday, Feb. 19. Contact Helen Buchanan (; 919-962-2092) in the Communications and Public Affairs office. Parking passes will emailed. Credentials may be picked up at the media table at Gate B beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 22. (Media covering the Feb. 21 men’s basketball game may also pick up credentials from Karen Moon in the press room before the game.)


Pool coverage:

Media will not be allowed to bring video cameras inside the Smith Center.
UNC-TV will provide a switched video and audio feed via satellite from a multi-camera crew in the Smith Center that will cover the entire service so stations will have the ability to broadcast the event live. Electronic media representatives can take video and audio feeds from a distribution set-up in a tent near the front row of the Williamson lot. The feed will be 1080i via HD-SDI.


Satellite details: This is an HD 1080i digital transmission. Transmission standard:  DVB-S QPSK MPEG-2. AMC-16 located at 85 degrees west. Transponder: K24 slot B18. KU band. Downlink: 12189.0 Mhz. L band: 1439 Mhz. Polarity: horizontal. Symbol rate: 14.028723 MSps. FEC 3/4. The feed will not be closed captioned. Trouble numbers: 919-485-3346 or 919-549-7249. The test window will be from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.


At the Smith Center

Parking: Television satellite trucks will be issued credentials to park in the Williamson lot, which is located across the street from the Smith Center. All other media will be issued passes to park in the Bowles lot. Stations wishing to go live may do so from the Williamson parking lot.


Media check in: Media representatives should check in with the Office of Communications and Public Affairs at a table just inside of Entrance B. Doors will be open to the media at 12:30 p.m. Please be prepared to present a photo ID.


Photography: Still photographers may photograph the service only from designated areas located in sections 101, 107 and 133. (For planning purposes, that is about a 180-foot throw from the stage.) Approximately an hour after the conclusion of the ceremony, UNC Department of Athletics Director of Photography Jeffrey Camarati will provide pool photographs taken from behind the stage via a DropBox link.


Entry and seating: All media should enter through Entrance B and check in at the media table located just inside the door. Seats in section 111 will be reserved for credentialed reporters. Working media must be seated by 1:45 p.m.


Access to work space: Media are welcome to work in the in the Smith Center press room, which is located on the first floor, or at tables in the first-floor hallway near the visiting team locker room. To access these areas, media must use the elevator or stairs at Entrance D.


Other details: The service will be carried live on, ESPN3 and on the UNC Athletics YouTube channel.
