The Carolina News Studio is the University’s portal to regional, national and global broadcast news outlets. The studio is dedicated to enhancing the University’s media presence by showcasing the expertise of UNC faculty and staff.

Studio personnel will proactively seek opportunities for UNC experts to share their knowledge and insights with reporters and producers working on daily news stories. UNC experts will be available for broadcast interviews to promote research, comment on other newsworthy topics, and participate in public debate.

There are three main criteria for UNC faculty and staff to be considered a news source:

  1. Individual is recognized nationally or internationally for excellence in their field
  2. Individual completed University-recognized media training and has performed well in previous media interviews
  3. Individual is available on short notice—sometimes within an hour timeframe—and willing to be available after hours and on weekends

Use of the studio and editing equipment will be prioritized by breaking news, breaking University news, and daily network news requests. When not in use for interviews, the studio and editing equipment will be used by journalism students and studio staff to create news-related packages. Except for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the studio will not be used by individual departments, schools or centers for non-news production.

If you have any questions about the studio use policy, please contact Karen Moon or Rob Holliday.

The Studio Manager, Rob Holliday, can assist you in setting up an interview for your broadcast.

When working with the national media, time is of the essence. The Studio Coordinator will make every attempt to notify campus communicators when pitching a UNC expert or receiving a request for a source.

Communicators should contact the Studio Manager when you have a source or a story to pitch to the national media that involves use of the Carolina News Studio; when you or someone in your department has been contact by a broadcast outlet wanting to use the studio; to schedule a one-on-one or small-group media training session; to suggest a feature story for UNC’s YouTube site or other University video site.

If you are unable to reach the Studio Manager, please contact Media Relations at (919) 445-8555.
